Our Commitment

The Efik Women's Association USA is committed to safeguarding the welfare of all women, children, and vulnerable adults who come into contact with our organization. We recognize that everyone has the right to live free from abuse, harm, and neglect.

This Safeguarding Policy outlines our commitment to creating a safe environment and our procedures for responding to concerns about abuse or harm.

This policy applies to all individuals who interact with our organization, including:

• Members of the Efik Women's Association USA
• Women seeking support services
• Children and young people involved in our programs
• Vulnerable adults who may be at risk
• Volunteers and staff members
• Visitors to our events and activities

How to Report Concerns

If you have concerns about someone's safety or welfare, please report them immediately. You can:

Our Response Procedures

When a safeguarding concern is raised, we will:

1. Listen and Document: Take all concerns seriously and document them accurately
2. Assess Risk: Evaluate the level of risk and urgency of the situation
3. Ensure Safety: Take immediate action to ensure the safety of the individual at risk
4. Report to Authorities: Contact appropriate authorities (police, social services) when required
5. Provide Support: Offer appropriate support and referrals to specialized services
6. Maintain Confidentiality: Share information only on a need-to-know basis
7. Follow Up: Monitor the situation and provide ongoing support as needed
8. Review: Learn from each case to improve our safeguarding practices

Confidentiality and Information Sharing

We maintain strict confidentiality in all safeguarding matters. However, we may need to share information:

• When there is a risk of serious harm to the individual or others
• When required by law or court order
• To protect children or vulnerable adults
• With relevant authorities (police, social services) when necessary
• With partner organizations providing support services (with consent where possible)

We will always aim to inform individuals when we need to share their information, unless doing so would increase risk.

Training and Awareness

We are committed to ensuring that all members, volunteers, and staff:

• Receive appropriate safeguarding training
• Understand their responsibilities in safeguarding
• Know how to recognize signs of abuse
• Are aware of reporting procedures
• Receive regular updates on safeguarding best practices

Policy Review

This Safeguarding Policy is reviewed annually or following any significant safeguarding incident. We welcome feedback and suggestions for improvement from members and stakeholders.
